We thought about this in the most basic sense: materiality, scale, color. These are all things that are experienced uniquely in the real world. We wanted to create a piece where the shared experience of these qualities can only be enjoyed in person, not virtually. The material, color and printing—the collective physical experience—is intentionally made better than the virtual image. This is an interesting place to dwell creatively. We’ve become accustomed to image being the end result of our work, but reproduced images can have certain limitations and as we know in today’s digital age, be quite ephemeral. With simplicity, we can divert our attention to other things: shape, texture, scale, color—they are tools to be in the present, to be with the people around us. As an expression of community, being in the now, with those around us, experiencing something unique to the moment and place, was the greatest connection we could think of.
